An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a crucial device for saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest. Here’s when and how to use it:
- Assess the Situation:
- Check if the person is breathing and has a pulse.
- If no pulse and no breathing, call for emergency help (911).
- Have someone else call while you prepare the AED.
- Turn On the AED:
- As soon as an AED is available, turn it on.
- Follow the voice prompts provided by the AED.
- Prepare the Chest:
- Remove clothing covering the chest.
- Attach the AED pads correctly:
- Place one pad on the upper right side of the chest.
- Place the other pad on the lower left side of the chest (a few inches below the left armpit).
- If the pads may touch, place one pad in the middle of the chest and the other on the back, between the shoulder blades.
- Analyze the Heart Rhythm:
- Ensure no one is touching the person.
- Say, “CLEAR!” in a loud, commanding voice.
- Let the AED analyze the heart’s rhythm.
- Deliver a Shock (if needed):
- If advised by the AED, say, “CLEAR!” again.
- Push the “shock” button to deliver the shock.
- Start CPR Immediately:
- If the AED delivers a shock or advises against it, begin CPR with chest compressions.
Remember, AEDs are often placed in public areas like sports venues, shopping malls, airports, and schools. Familiarize yourself with their location and be prepared to act swiftly when needed
