ELECTRIC SHOCK TIPS

Encountering someone who has been electrocuted can be a dangerous situation. Here are the steps to follow to help the person and ensure your safety:

  1. Ensure your safety: Before approaching the person, ensure that the area is safe from electrical hazards. Do not touch the person if they are still in contact with the electrical source, as you could also become electrocuted.
  2. Call for help: Call emergency services (911 or your local emergency number) immediately. Inform them that someone has been electrocuted so that they can dispatch appropriate medical and rescue personnel.
  3. Turn off the power: If it’s safe to do so and you can reach the power source without endangering yourself, turn off the source of electricity. If you cannot turn off the power, try to move the source away from the person using a non-conductive object, such as a dry wooden stick or plastic.
  4. Check for responsiveness: Determine if the person is responsive (conscious) or not. If they are not responsive:
    • Start CPR: If the person is not breathing or does not have a pulse, begin CPR immediately. Perform chest compressions and rescue breaths according to CPR guidelines until help arrives.
  5. Do not move the person unless necessary: Moving an electrocuted person can be dangerous if there are spinal injuries or fractures. If you must move them to perform CPR or to remove them from the electrical source, try to do so carefully and without bending or twisting their spine.
  6. Cover the person: Cover the person with a blanket or coat to keep them warm and prevent shock, but avoid covering their face.
  7. Monitor the person: Continuously monitor the person’s breathing and pulse until emergency services arrive.
  8. Provide information: When emergency services arrive, provide them with any information about the incident, including how the person was electrocuted and any actions taken.

It’s crucial to remember that electricity can cause severe internal injuries even if there are no visible burns or external signs of injury. Always prioritize your safety and call for professional medical assistance as soon as possible.
